Historical milestones, founding origins, and technological breakthroughs.
Valtra’s engineering lineage traces back to 1851 with Munktells in Sweden and 1951 when Finnish state rifle works Valmet began building tractors in Jyväskylä, Finland, to support post-war land clearing. Engineered for extreme sub-zero Scandinavian winters, rugged forestry operations, and heavy farming, Valmet tractors were designed with exceptional ground clearance, protected undercarriages, and integrated pneumatic braking.
In 1979, Valmet acquired Volvo BM’s agricultural tractor division, creating Scandinavia's undisputed tractor titan. Rebranded as Valtra Valmet and later Valtra, the company pioneered "TwinTrac"—an ergonomic swiveling operator seat with rear-facing steering wheel and pedals allowing full-power reverse work with mowers and woodchippers. Acquired by AGCO in 2004, Valtra operates its custom modular factory in Suolahti, Finland, where every tractor is custom-built to each buyer's exact operational specifications.
